Comprehension: Monitor/Clarify When we read, we stop and ask ourselves questions. What will you do when you don’t understand something?

Monitor/Clarify Good readers think about whether they understand what they are reading. They ask if what they are reading makes sense.

Monitor To monitor means to watch over something, to be in charge of, to check. Stop and ask: Do I understand?

Clarify To clarify means to make clear. Good readers re-read to make the text clear.

Writing: Paragraph A paragraph is a group of sentences that tell about one main idea. The first sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph.

Writing: Paragraph The first line of a paragraph is indented. It is pushed in a little from the left margin. A paragraph usually has 3 to 5 sentences. The last sentence should summarize the main idea.

Example: Paragraph A safe home keeps people from getting hurt. Shoes or toys should not be left on the stairs. Matches, medicines and cleaners should be locked safely away. Grown-ups should get the things that are up on high shelves so children do not fall and get hurt. Everyone in the family can help to keep a home safe.

Bible Lesson Jesus Teaches the Multitude Jesus Disciples Sea of Galilee mountain multitude

Vocabulary Lesson 17 multitude – a group of many teacher – one who educates law – set of rules sea – a large body of water heaven – any place above the earth kingdom – place ruled by a king ship – vessel for traveling on water

Jesus spoke for God. He taught people about the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus and his disciples often crossed the Sea of Galilee in a ship. Everywhere he went, people followed him.

When he was on the ship, people could see him coming.

They would gather at the shore to hear him speak or to ask for healing.

Sometimes he taught from the ship so all could hear him. Other times he taught from the top of a mountain.

He taught the Israelites to love their enemies. He told them they were the lights of the world. He told them not to judge others. Most important of all, he told them to seek God first.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

He taught his disciples how to pray. He told them that he had not come to get rid of the law, but to fulfill it. He also told them to watch out for false prophets.

Jesus answered questions.

The multitude would listen for so long that they would get hungry, and Jesus would feed them.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Bible Verse Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17

Song: “Glory to His Name” I am so wondrously saved from sin, Jesus so sweetly abides within, There at the cross where he took me in, Glory to his name.

Song: “Glory to His Name” Chorus: Glory to His name, glory to His name, There to my heart was the blood applied, Glory to His name.

Song: “Glory to His Name” O precious fountain that saves from sin, I am so glad I accepted him. Jesus has saved me and lives within, Glory to his name.

Song: “Glory to His Name” Chorus: Glory to His name, glory to His name, There to my heart was the blood applied, Glory to His name.
