Help you think creatively about so many things related to research, scholarship and creative activity? Did you know that CRPDE will…

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA CRPDE Initiatives in Continue to coordinate the development of several significant proposals, including NSF programs (PFI, I-Corps, MRIs, IGERT, and STEM initiatives) and complex funding initiatives Offering Graduate Grant Writing Workshops in Fall, 2012 (crpde.ou.edu/workshops) Seeking input on topics for workshops in Spring, 2013 ( with suggestions) Planning to host a research related symposium with Minority Serving Institutions in early spring, 2013 Building resources related to broadening participation of underrepresented groups, STEM Education and Research, and Arts and Humanities. Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Two Example Initiatives Oklahoma Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) - NSF Examining several data sets regarding research engagement.

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR A state is eligible to participate in the NSF EPSCoR Program if their most recent 3-year level of NSF research support is equal to or less than 0.75% Oklahoma has received 0.42% of the total of NSF’s funding (over the past 3 years) – California = 12.64% – New York = 5.82% – Massachusetts = 5.56% – Virginia = 5.4% – Colorado = 5%

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA EPSCoR States

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Oklahoma NSF EPSCoR Since 2008, NSF has helped Oklahoma build research capacity and capabilities related to bioenergy and biofuels ( Currently, we are submitting a new proposal to NSF to build research capacity and capabilities related to climate variability. – Proposal is due October 3, 2012 – $20M for research infrastructure, personnel, student and program support statewide – Notification of proposal outcome will occur in Spring, 2013

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Research Engagement We have many questions… – Where does OU have strength in research, scholarship, creative activity? – What resources are needed to enhance existing strengths or build new strengths? – What are the challenges we have that limit our competitiveness? – Who is interested and what do they need? – Why does all of this matter?

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Research Engagement Kelvin showed information on external funding success rates. We are also considering how many women at OU engage in research through measures of external funding – 10 Year Data Set – Considered Female Faculty in a position as PI and/or as Co-PI Example Findings so far: – The number of unique female PIs is increasing at a rate more than twice that of male PIs – The number of male lead PIs is trending downward while the number of lead female PIs is trending upward – 2011 represents a ten-year high of the proportion of female faculty with new awards to male faculty with new awards

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Research Engagement Across the 10 years considered: – 2 female PIs have had continuous funding – 12 female PIs have had continuous funding for 8 or 9 of those 10 years – 10 female PIs have had continuous funding for N-1 of their years at OU Still need to consider trends across male PIs Also looking in to national trends

Office of the Vice President for Research N ORMAN C AMPUS AND N ORMAN C AMPUS P ROGRAMS AT OU-T ULSA Engaging Research Resources Encourage faculty, postdocs, and graduate students to seek assistance from CRPDE, OVPR, CARD Invite CRPDE staff to talk to departments about internal funding programs or about engaging in research, utilizing resources We are working to improve our knowledge of Broader Impacts activities statewide CRPDE is working to increase the number of real relationships and collaborations with minority-serving and regional institutions Being bold, having bold ideas, doing more requires greater assistance – faculty need to ask for help
