iDeaWORKS is a Mohawk College initiative linking innovation, entrepreneurship and applied research Innovation—Focuses on improving productivity, efficiency, and value creation in the service sector. Entrepreneurship—Encourages entrepreneurs- in-the-making through The Hatchery, a pre-incubator that provides guidance, facilities and seed money for student business ventures. Applied Research – Faculty and students work with businesses and other community partners in finding innovative solutions real-world challenges. Partners benefit from our expertise, technology and facilities; students learn practical skills and build relationships with future employers.

Students and faculty work on collaborative projects with industry and community partners Mobile Technology Advanced Materials Health Care Software Development Energy Service Innovation

Applied Research continues to expand Projects focused on solving real world problems using pragmatic solutions Leveraging a depth of Faculty knowledge Work performed by in class, course release, and co-op students Showcase Mohawk Graduates to industry partners Large project portfolio (past, present and future)

Applied Research Solve a practical problem May include: – Background research – Build prototype (reference implementation) – Documentation – Test modules – Build a solution or define a process Scientific Research Discover new knowledge using the scientific method – Background research – Hypothesis – Design experiment – Gather data – Analyze data – Conclusion

Projects Funded By NSERC Building the Canadian Electronic Health Record Solution Reference Implementation Techniques to simplify and optimize HL7v3 messages Software technologies to simplify connections to the Reference system Integration of components into the EHRS

Why is the EHR important? Healthcare professionals make clinical decisions based on knowledge Better knowledge translates to better care Knowledge starts with accurate, relevant clinical information The EHR creates the capability to share relevant clinical information The 5 Rs of the EHR: – The right information – About the right client – Available to the right person – In the right place – At the right time

Clients/Patients Pharmacy Laboratory Diagnostic Hospital Emergency Homecare Community Care Center Clinic Emergency Services Specialist Clinic Locations of Electronic Clinical Data Today: 40,000 Systems to Integrate

Canada Health Infoway Canada Health Infoway is an independent, not-for-profit organization whose members are Canada's 14 federal, provincial and territorial Deputy Ministers of Health Infoway is Canada's catalyst for collaborative change to accelerate the use of electronic health information systems and electronic health records (EHRs) across the country

HL7v3 API – Everest Framework Everest Framework – Improve experience with v3 messages Easy to create structures – Parameterized constructors – Hide fixed members Fixed value sets – Use enumerations instead of strings – Business names instead of mnemonics Format structures (ie:Date/Time) for the developer – Improve code re-usability

EHR Project Scope & Guidelines Research & Development Phase (overlaps the other phases)‏ – Health System Management – EHRi Load/stress testing – Mobile eHealth technologies – Personal Health Records – Innovative Privacy & Security Technologies Future – Drug domain – Diagnostic Imaging domain – Public Health Surveillance – National e-Claims Standard
