What affects your health?

Heredity – traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. Environment – your surroundings including physical, social, and cultural aspects. What affects your health?

Physical Environment – where you live, access to parks, recreational facilities, and libraries, access to medical care, and air and water quality. Social Environment – family and peers Culture – collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group  Language you speak  Foods you eat  Spiritual beliefs and traditions What affects your health? ENVIRONMENT

Attitude – the way you view situations  This class  Graduation  Receiving a rejection letter from a college  Having a job  Going to a party  Getting a pet What affects your health?

Behavior – every day decisions you make  Diet and exercise  Entering a high-risk situation  Helping others  Cleaning up after yourself What affects your health?

Six Risk Behaviors Tobacco Use Unhealthy diet Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behavior leading to HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Risk Behavior - actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others

Cumulative Risks – related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Abstinence – deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs What affects your health? BEHAVIOR

Media – various methods for communicating information. How do you obtain information?
