Figurative Language Objectives: We will be able to identify and use figurative language in our reading and writing. We will be able to differentiate between the different types of figurative language.

What is figurative language Mrs. Heady?  I’m so glad you asked that question!!!  Figurative language is a tool that an author employs (or uses) to help the reader visualize (or see) what is happening in a story or poem. Some common types of figurative language are: simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, idiom, puns, and sensory language.

Simile  A SIMILE is a figure of speech where X is compared to Y, using the words AS or LIKE.  For example,  You are as pretty as a budding lilac.

Metaphor  A METAPHOR is a figure of speech where X is compared to Y, and where X is said TO BE Y. A METAPHOR says that X IS Y.  For example,  Sara is as happy as a lark.

Personification  Personification is when something that is not human becomes human.  For example…a talking pig!!!!  Charlotte’s Web  Beauty and the Beast

Alliteration  Alliteration is when the first letter in a word is repeated in several words.  For example,  Angela Abigail Applewhite ate anchovies and artichokes.  Bertha Bartholomew blew big, blue bubbles.  Dwayne Dwiddle drew a drawing of dreaded Dracula.  Greta Gruber grabbed a group of green grapes.

Onomatopoeia  An onomatopoeia is a word or a grouping of words that imitates the sound it is describing. word  For example,  Oink  Clank  Boom

Puns  A pun is a phrase that’s funny. phrase  For example,  I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.  Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.  I couldn't quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me.

Idioms  a phrase that does not make any literal sense. phrase  For example:  Get your mind out of the gutter.  A Blessing In Disguise.  A Chip On Your Shoulder.  A Dime A Dozen.  A Doubting Thomas.

Imagery… Sensory Language   Def: Sensory language is language that uses words from the 5 senses.  For example,  Delicious  Scrumptious  Stinky  Chalky  Rough  Piercing  Loud  Eye candy

Come and journey with me through…  A figurative language unit that will blow your mind!!!!!
