iPads in a 5 th Grade Classroom Jamie K. Loveland

Why use iPads in the classroom?  iPads allow us to access information instantly and to practice making sense of the bits of data.  iPads are a natural progression to 1:1 ratio for technical devices for students.  The 1:1 ratio of iPads allows for frequent formative assessments and instant student feedback.  At the present time, they are a huge motivator for the students. (I know the excitement will fade in time, but I am taking advantage of it now!)  iPads support the core curriculum!

Making Sense of Information

Let’s use it!

Technology Continuum Computer Lab Few computers in classroom SMARTBoards Shared Laptop Carts 1:1 (iPads)

1.1 Digital Learning Environment A 1.1 environment integrates the use of today's digital tools to support core district curriculum. adapt to individual learning styles encourage collaboration build teamwork learn in relevant, real world 21st century contexts

iPads support the core curriculum.

Using the iPad to support the curriculum: Kindle (Free eBooks from HTFL) Information Seeking Strategies (Access Webpath Express, Kids Info, Ask for Kids, Kids Info, Time for Kids) Study Island (Assessment Portion) OSCAR Assessments Classroom Website Posterous Google Docs Easy Bib Show Me Garage Band White Board/Chalk Board Everyday Math Games Pages Keynote

Kindle  Students bring in a login from home.  Free app for home, school, and anywhere in-between.  Students can have access to funds, gift cards, etc.  Students may also take out free ebooks from the HTFL.HTFL  Use for SSR in LA.  Use for reading books in other subjects that relate to the theme.  I would love to find a way to have a classroom account for guided reading books and centers.

Information Seeking Strategies (Access Webpath Express, Kids Info, Ask for Kids, Time for Kids) Also wonderful for SSR!

Study Island Whole Group Lesson Individual Assessment Provides instant results and data for future planning.

OSCAR Assessments Vs. Note: Management of materials may be distracting.

Classroom Website (Use as a “home base”.) Access study guides. PDF Flash cards for tests. Have audio files of anthology and guided reading books for centers or seat work. Each student brings in ear buds!

Posterous Math Message Have students reply to the math message with answers. Immediate formative assessment. Book Blogs Use to document SSR. Increases collaboration and interested in reading between students. Students may comment. Free Blogging Art Rapping No student logins!

Pages Writing Process Piece Timeline Students plan in notebook Students draft in Pages App Students copy and paste to Google Docs Students share the document with the teacher in Google Docs or s the document to the teacher. Show Me Students create tutorials for each other. These tutorials look like a voice over whiteboard drawing. Use mostly in math. How to convert fractions with unlike denominators, etc

Garage Band Great for FLUENCY! Am I reading at an appropriate pace? Am I using expression? Am I reading punctuation? Am I reading accurately?

White Board/Chalk Board

Everyday Math Games

Keynote Use as formative or summative assessments. Students create short 1-3 slide presentations to demonstrate learned content. Utilize in Social Studies frequently. Examples: Create a slide highlighting the important facts about a Revolutionary War battle. Create 2 slides highlighting an amendment to the constitution.
