Edward Munch
Life oMunch was born on Dec. 12, 1863, in Loten, Norway. oHis parents, a brother, and a sister died while he was still young, which probably contributes to his bleak outlook on life illustrated in his paintings. oHe grew up studying art under Christian Krohg, a Norwegian naturalistic painter.
ART Travelled to Paris in 1885 to study art. Work began as impressionist and then postimpressionist through the French influence. Due to his tragic childhood, he had a dismally acute awareness of death and pain, which is reflected in his work. In his later life, however, paintings grow more colorful and less pessimistic.

"We want more than a mere photograph of nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing-room walls. We want to create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests and engages. An art created of one's innermost heart." (E.M.)
