Project Management Gaafar 2006 / 2 Definition of Quality n Quality is the sum of characteristics of an entity that describes and affects its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs, it’s conformance to requirements and it’s fitness for use n Meeting or exceeding your customers’ requirements/needs. n Doing the right things right first time and every time

Project Management Gaafar 2006 / 9 Quality Assurance n Quality assurance involves all the tasks done to satisfy and ensure the required quality standards for a project n The aim of quality assurance is continuous quality improvement n Quality audits help identify defects and that can improve performance on current or future projects

Project Management Gaafar 2006 / 10 Quality Control n The main output of quality control include: –Acceptance decisions –Rework –Process adjustments n Tools and techniques used include –Pareto analysis –statistical sampling –quality control charts –testing

Project Management Gaafar 2006 / 11 The Cost of Quality n The cost of quality is –the cost of conformance or delivering products that meet requirements and fitness for use –the cost of nonconformance or taking responsibility for failures or not meeting quality expectations

Project Management Gaafar 2006 / 12 Four Cost Categories Related to Quality n Prevention cost: the cost of planning and executing a project so it is error-free or within an acceptable error range n Appraisal cost: the cost of evaluating processes and their outputs to ensure quality n Internal failure cost: cost incurred to correct an identified defect before the customer receives the product n External failure cost: cost that relates to all errors not detected and corrected before delivery to the customer
