Volume, Mass, and Density Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object. Mass can be expressed.
Instruments of Measurement. A balance is used to measure the amount of matter an object contains and is measured in grams.
VOLUME Volume Definition: The amount of space an object takes up. Tools/Instruments for volume: –Liquid volume: Graduated Cylinder –Solid volume: Ruler.

MEASUREMENTS:

SI = International System of Units (standard system of measurement) You must always label measurements with the appropriate unit. Example: 5, 5 what? 5cm

SI UNITS: Length = meters (m) Volume = liters (L) Mass = kilograms (kg) Time = seconds (s)

When you are taking measurements with a….. Ruler…you will need to know the difference between cm and mm. This is measuring LENGTH.

You want to read from the bottom of the meniscus. Graduated Cylinder… You want to read from the bottom of the meniscus. The meniscus = the curved line of liquid on a graduated cylinder Read to the nearest .1 (tenth) Example: 25.3mL (the units from a graduated cylinder is milliliters) This is measuring VOLUME

You will read to the nearest .1 (tenth). Balance: You will read to the nearest .1 (tenth). You will add up all three arms of measurement to get total mass. Example 132.4g (grams) This is measuring MASS.

What does this read? Always start with the biggest and then work down to the smallest. 373.3g
