To promote philanthropic culture in Mexico and to encourage the organized participation of society in its own integral development and in the solution of community problems. CEMEFI´S Mission
program Backround (Look after the others)
This program was born in 1994 responding to CEMEFI´S mission: “To promote philanthropic culture in Mexico...”
To promote social action in order for people to get involved in the solution of their own problems. To introduce change in the participation attitude, upon the basis that everybody has something to give. Goals:
Promotes new non profit civil society organizations, working for others. Involves people from different sectors in the act of giving. Actions:
Promotes the concept of Enterprise, Government and Citizen Social Responsibility. Promotes corporate donations of “1% of the profit before taxes”. Actions:
In 1996 CEMEFI gives birth to the Corporate Responsibility Program to support the development of initiatives from the private sector towards social investment in their community
In 1998, CEMEFI promotes the campaign: “100 Actions to start with” which are simple ideas to “Look after the others”. None of these proposals ask for money, but mainly time and talent.
“Anonymous Heroes” which recognizes extraordinary civic actions that are nominated by its clients. In 1999, it develops a campaign for Wal- Mart Mexico: Actions:
Towards the IYV 2001, it designs the campaign: “1 hour for Mexico”, encouraging the public to give such weekly time in civil organizations. Actions:
“1 Hour for Mexico” gathered more than 60 thousand signatures of potential volunteers. The challenge now is to bring them to the civil society organizations that work throughout the country.
CEMEFI, together with the ITESM created a database in order to enable the link among organizations and potential volunteers. Therefore, those who wanted to work as volunteers, reached the organization that matched their needs and abilities.
Lack of a strategic plans to detect the helping needs Programs designing, involving volunteers We had to learn how to elaborate specific working offers and the adequate profiles needed Didn’t have a maintaining and recognition program for volunteers Promoting Volunteerism Learning experience This partnership with the ITESM taught us that philanthropic organizations were not ready yet to receive volunteers, due to:
A volunteer program must start in the organizations, rather than training volunteers The process of sending volunteers to the organizations from only one organization, may be very expensive, both in money, time and expertise Sending volunteers to the organizations would be a great effort with very poor results Promoting Volunteerism Learning experience Besides this process, we learned that:
A “facilitator” who allowed contacting people with organizations That the potential volunteers knew, from the beginning, the specific tasks and schedules that would be asked for Giving alternatives to receive volunteer help Complete information about the interested organizations Promoting Volunteerism Learning experience Requirements:
In 2001, CEMEFI signs a partnership with Fundación Chandra, which developed a software that facilitates the link between volunteers and organizations.
A “facilitator” who allowed the people to make direct contact with the organizations That the potential volunteers knew, from the beginning, the specific tasks and schedules that would be asked to give Giving alternatives to receive volunteer help Complete information about the interested organization Partnership with Fundación Chandra This organization developed a software that covered the above mentioned requirements:
The same year CEMEFI invites BBVA Bancomer (a bank) to participate as sponsor of the portal. The bank accepts the challenge due to its high social impact to promote volunteering in Mexico.
