Outline of presentation Media Independent Handover as North-Bound Interface ONF: Open Networking Foundation  Created to promote Software Defined Networking  Has an explicit focus on OpenFlow  Is extremely active and very well funded  Initially, equipment vendors were almost 2 nd class citizens ONF has created a new Discussion Group for Wireless & Mobility (WMDG) Based on some initial discussion within members. I submitted to WMDG a use case intended as work item SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 3

OpenFlow: an agent of change Originated from Stanford as a way to enable campus-scale network experimentation (funded by NSF Clean-Slate) Gained consideration as a much more general wide-area solution [OpenFlow :: traditional routing ] == [ RISC :: CISC ]  OpenFlow often used as a tool to create overlay networks  OpenFlow switches are supposed to be dumb and very cheap  90% cheaper than existing infrastructure routing fabric?  Simpler equipment  less expensive OpEx?  Protocol defines match tables for incoming packets  Each match triggers an action – e.g., select output port  Non-matching packets are sent to controller (or dropped) SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 4

SDN Controller SDN Controller configures switches by using OpenFlow Software on the SDN controller “creates” the network (policy, topology, …) – e.g., overlay networks SDN controller software updates “instantly” change the network  More agile than replacing router hardware  Has been proposed to de-emphasize need for standardization  Increases the need for improved configuration management  “orchestration” Signaling from the SDN controller constitutes the “control plane” SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 5

Wireless & Mobility Discussion Gp. ONF has chartered quite a few Working Groups   Architecture, Extensibility, Config, Market Education, etc. Discussion Group can become Working Group if there’s interest ONF has created (WMDG), a new Discussion Group for Wireless & Mobility WMDG is applying to the ONF Board to be chartered  In this process, collecting use cases (e.g., MIH, NFV) SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 6

Use Case: PoS as SDN Controller specifies Media Independent Handover mediated by a Point of Service (PoS) OpenFlow is a Media-Independent protocol for controlling switch operations  should be a natural fit for Idea: model fabric between PoA and PoS as composed of OpenFlow switches Idea: try to use OpenFlow switches to work as PoA  Then PoS can naturally be considered an SDN controller SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 7

802.21m Guidance: Learn from important use case This is a modern use case for , so will help understand proper organization for m revision Idea: investigate make-before-break and break-before-make handover behavior Also will be very helpful to generate additional interest First step: identify specific wireless access network (WiFi?) and representative topology Select a representative deployment scenario (Enterprise?) Could also engage work from other Use Cases in WMDG SAUC WMDG Use Case Proposal 8
