Early World – Part I Genesis 1-3

Timeline Information Time Period Early World Narrative Books Genesis 1-11 Supplemental Books None

Timeline Information God’s Family Plan One Holy Couple – Mediator is Adam – Sign is the Sabbath One Holy Family – Mediator is Noah – Sign is the Rainbow Action In the Northern Countries Time Creation of the World through 2000 BC

Timeline Information World Power Egypt Secular History Great Pyramids – 2685 BC Stonehenge – Around 2000 BC

Creation (#1 on timeline) Genesis 1:1 – 2:4 The Creation Narratives God creates in 6 days - rests on 7th The narrative the why… not the how

Creation Separation Decoration 1st Day: Light/Darkness 4th Day: Sun/Moon & Stars 2nd Day: Water 5th Day: Birds/Fish 3rd Day: Dry Land 6th Day: Animals/Man (Earth) Water (Seas) Vegetation 7th Day: Sabbath (Rest)

Creation God begins to reveal Himself in Genesis “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth…” - Genesis 1:1 “Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness.” - Genesis 1:26

Who is God? Abba: Loving Father God is creator Exists outside time He is all love, all knowledge He is always acting and never changing

Who is God? The Trinity One God nature, three persons Nature: What causes an act Our actions tell us who we are God’s action tells us that He is creator Person: Who acts Father – Creates Son – Redeems Holy Spirit – Sanctifies We understand people by their actions This is the Trinity: Father loves the Son Their love is so intense it creates the third person: Holy Spirit

In God’s Image and Likeness Created by God Only man is someONE and not someTHING Divine Providence: God’s caring for us and guiding us Only man can know God and share His life

In God’s Image and Likeness Created by God We are above creation and have dominion over it (we name the animals, God names man) We are partners in God’s creation Man and woman together are the image of God

One Holy Couple Gn 2:4-25 Adam - mediator of this covenant Sign = Sabbath Worship is written into the universe by God God desires communion (common union) with man Faith: Man’s response to God’s invitation to union with him We must act (respond) to God, not wait for God to do all the work, we have a choice It is our “Nature” to worship Him with our “Persons”

Original Nakedness Original Sacrament of Adam and Eve Sacrament: Earthly sign of heavenly Grace The gift of Grace: Supernatural life that allows the soul to live united with God Soul: The immortal, spiritual part of the human person that gives him the power to: Intellect: Power to reason out what is right (knowledge) Free Will: Power to choose what is right (love)

Original Nakedness Original Sacrament of Adam and Eve They saw the other as: A gift from God for them Free: Given without manipulation or force Total: The whole person and nature is given Fruitful: The Love will bear fruit, as the Father, Son, Holy Spirit Faithful: It will never end A person is to be sacrificed FOR, not an object to be used Love: The ability to SACRIFICE the self for another’s well-being

Original Sin Gn 3:1-24 The Fall: #2 on timeline This “Original Sacrament” is broken up by original sin Humans begin to see each other as an object to be used Satan tempts by planting doubt in the mind by lying about: God’s intent, motivation, quality of love Satan wants them to convince them… that they know what is good and evil better then God that God’s love isn’t free, total, fruitful and faithful

Original Sin Original sin of Adam and Eve is passed down through all people and is washed away in Baptism Sin: Missing the mark We freely choose to go against God’s will Venial: Allows love to live, even though it offends and wounds love Mortal: Destroys love in the heart of man by a grave violation of God’s law

Original Shame: The Consequences Adam and Eve realize they are naked They hide from each other and God God is perceived as punishing judge, not Abba They blame each other Man/Woman relationship fractured Death enters the world (hostile world, procreation) Love is no longer free, total, fruitful, and faithful

The Protoevangelium (#3 on timeline) Gn 3:15 A Resolution from God Proto-evangelium: The announcement of a future Redeemer to Adam and Eve after their fall. Greek for “first gospel.” The offspring of the woman will “crush the head” while the snake bites the heel (refers to Jesus) WE CAN RECOVER

The Protoevangelium A Resolution from God God will spend the rest of Scripture getting us “back to the Garden” and showing us how to love again In the end, he will establish His Kingdom on Earth

Early World – Part II Genesis 4-11

Cain and Abel Gn 4:1-16 Sacrifice to God Sacrifice: The act of offering something to please God or gods Cain becomes the first murderer Envy causes Cain to use his wrath God is not bound by man’s law, he chooses the 2 nd born (Abel) 3 rd born Seth becomes ancestor of Jesus Sin has spread from Adam and Eve to their children

Cain and Abel The Offering Abel gives best and Cain gives leftovers God wants our best!

The Flood (#4 on the timeline) Gn 7:1- 9:17 Things to Know Noah hungers for the righteousness of God When the water recedes, God makes a covenant with Noah to renew the earth through “one holy family” Rainbow = sign of covenant

The Flood This story shows: Sin has spread to all humanity – sin has consequences!! Only God saves and gives a 2nd chance

The Tower of Babel (#5 on timeline) Gn 11:1-9 The Story Shows Sin has progressed… People are only concerned with themselves and not God Vanity, pride Consequence of sin = confusion of languages
