Quotation Marks and Underlining

Quotation marks are another type of punctuation. They are used in many ways.

Zack said, I will play my tuba in the gymnasium. Use quotation marks before and after a speakers exact words.

Sue just read the story The Kite in Flight. Use quotation marks for titles of stories, songs, and poems.

Have you read Charlottes Web? Underlining is a way to identify titles of books, plays, and magazines.

Writing Connection: Quotation marks and underlining provide special information to readers. Quotation marks signal when someone is speaking. Underlining signals some type of published writing.

Examples: Corduroy said, I wish someone would buy me. The title of the book is Corduroys New Coat. My favorite chapter is called At the Store.
