Best Seller’s theory on dating: In the words of author Greg Behrendt, "If a (sane) guy really likes you, there ain't nothing that's going to get in his way." Authors Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo challenge their readers to avoid men who:  Keep them waiting by the phone  Are not sure they want a relationship  Make them feel sexually undesirable  Drink or do drugs to an extent it makes them uncomfortable  Fear talking about the future  Are married

Gigi and Alex Chapter 2 - He’s just not that into you if he’s not calling you…  Gigi is a single woman who repeatedly misreads mundane actions and comments from her dates as indications they are romantically interested in her. She panics when the guy she is interested doesn’t call.  In attempting to meet Connor at a bar, she befriends the bar owner Alex (Justin Long) who reveals the strategies men use to avoid a woman. He explains that if a man is interested in a woman, he will overcome any obstacles to ensure they date again, and that Gigi has been misinterpreting and obsessing over imagined "signs" she receives from men. This friendship continues and Gigi interprets his eagerness to always assist as a “crush”. Alex claims he is not interested in her romantically.  Gigi has moved on from Alex, no longer desperately trying to construct evidence the man is interested in her. However, in a role reversal, Alex has become obsessed with Gigi. After leaving several unanswered messages Alex arrives at Gigi's apartment to declare his love, and they begin a relationship.

According to the U.S. Census 92 million unmarried Americans are 18 and older. (as of 2006) 54% of unmarried Americans 18 and older who are women. 35% percent of middle-aged American women said they preferred to date younger men. 12% of marriages are between older women and younger men. Source:

Janine, Ben, and Anna Chapter 5 - He’s just not that Into you if he’s having sex with someone else…  Janine is having difficulties in her marriage to Ben  Ben becomes mutually attracted to Anna, an aspiring singer and yoga instructor.  Ben and Anna pursue a flirtatious friendship ; she is under the impression that he will help her establish a singing career. Ben reveals to Anna that Janine threatened to leave him if he did not marry her.  Janine is anti-smoking due to her father’s death from lung cancer; therefore, she constantly asks Ben if he has been smoking  When Ben tells Janine that he cheated on her, she is devastated. She blames herself for being too cold in the marriage, and says that she wants to save it.  Janine finds a new pack of cigarettes in the pocket of one of Ben’s jackets. Ben arrives home he finds his clothes neatly folded with a note attached from Janine asking for a divorce.  Janine moves into a new apartment by herself to attempt to start over.  Anna sadly sings at a nightclub for a living.  Ben is alone.

 3,000 couples in the U.S. get divorced each day - well over 1 million per year (20-25% of these people are divorcing for the second or third time)  50% of all divorcing couples have children under the age of 18  12 million U.S. families were headed by a single parent during 2000  1out of 3 U.S. children do not live with both parents; 17% of all children in the U.S. will suffer a divorce this year  Second marriages will end 23% sooner than first marriages; and third marriages will end 43% sooner than first marriages. Source:

Beth & Neil Chapter 7 - He’s just not that into you if he doesn’t want to marry you…  Beth wants to get married but Neil doesn’t believe in marriage  They have been together for seven years and Beth insists that they get married or they are going to break up  A study found that most cited reason for cohabitating for males is sexual gratification, while for females marriage was stated as the most important motive.(Newcomb, 1979)

 Cohabitation increased by nearly 40 percent over the late 1990s and early 2000s ( Lichter, Sassler, & Turner, 2009).  Some people may feel that living together is enough, and don’t see the point of getting married if they all ready live together  Some people also believe that getting married might “jinx” the relationship Newcomb, P. (1979) Cohabitation in America: An Assessment of Consequences. Journal of Marriage and Family, 41(3), Lichter, D., Sassler, S. & Turnera, R. (2010) National Estimates in the rise of serial cohabitation. Social Science Research, 39(5),

 Stories are based on individual’s personal experiences. (fabricated in the film-to appease the audiences’ societal norms/standards)  Although the self help book is a Best Seller, people question it’s reliability.  No one person is the same when it comes to love, marriage & cohabitation!  Book needs a more concise theory & more data based on scholarly research.
