Welcome to AVID Family Night!

11 th grade goals College List By end of school year, students will have a list of 10 colleges/universities that they are experts on and intend to / will apply to fall of senior year. Develop 4 essential academic skills Analyzing a prompt Focused/Purpose Driven Reading Selective Note taking Integrating Sources into Text

Preparing for College: A – G Courses The University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) require entering freshmen to complete certain courses in high school. Here is the list of "a-g", with the number of years required in each subject. UC recommends additional years in some areas as indicated. Students should be enrolled in increasingly rigorous classes most appropriate for them! a. History/Social Science (2 years) b. English (4 years) c. Mathematics (3 years, UC recommends 4) d. Laboratory Science (2 years, UC recommends 3) e. Language Other than English (2 years, UC recommends 3) f. Visual/Performing Arts (1 year) g. College Preparatory Elective (1 year)

Preparing for College: Grades and GPA Junior year is CRITICAL. This is the last opportunity for students to boost their grades for college eligibility (Senior year GPA DOES NOT COUNT!!!) Summer of 11 th grade COUNTS! Students intent on applying to UC’s must have 11 of their A-G requirements (Core classes) completed WITH a C of BETTER by the end of 11 th grade. CSU’s require you to have all A-G requirements completed by the end of 12 th grade, BUT they will only use the GPA that students have accrued by the end of Junior year Students with a 3.0 or better (A-G classes) DO NOT HAVE THEIR TEST SCORES COUNTED (SAT/ACT) when applying to CSU’s

Preparing for College: PSAT -PSAT Test -Wednesday, October 14 th -Test AT SLHS during the school-day! -Students will NOT need to sign up OR pay! AVID will handle this for you. -We will review PSAT questions in class. -National Merit Scholarships = big time $$$$ -PSAT & SAT online practice –September 21 st – October 7 th –Mondays and Wednesdays after school (3-4pm). Counselors there to support! –SLHS Computer Lab

Preparing for College: College Entrance Tests Most 4-year colleges and universities require: SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) - or the ACT (American College Test) Some colleges also require or recommend the SAT subject tests AVID STUDENTS SHOULD BE TAKING SAT/ACT at LEAST TWICE (potentially 3 times): -SAT taken first time in Spring SAT/ACT taken again BEGINNING of September Depending on scores, SAT/ACT taken one more time OCT 2016

Preparing for College: College Entrance Tests UC’s-Certain Majors (Engineering/Science) suggest students take subject area tests WITH the SAT/ACT This is NOT a SUGGESTION, it is a REQUIREMENT!!! Students should be thinking about their majors and researching the testing requirements for different universities. CSU’s- The SAT is broken into 3 separate tests- Reading, Writing, and Math. For students who take the SAT multiple times, CSU’s take the best score from each of these tests to compile the best composite score! (This is why we want students taking the test multiple times)

Preparing for College: MINIMUM Eligibility Requirements University of California 3.0+ GPA (3 campuses: Riverside, Merced, Santa Cruz average incoming GPA UNDER 4.0) A-G Completion SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test w/Writing Personal Statement Extracurricular Activities California State University 2.0+ GPA A-G Completion SAT Reasoning or ACT Test Composite score- GPA+SAT= Composite score (lower the GPA, Higher the SAT; 3.0+= no score)

Preparing for College: Scholarships $$$ Facts: College is expensive!!! $$$ Every year, millions of dollars in scholarships go unclaimed because no student applied for them. Students increase their eligibility for a scholarship by applying to those that take time, thought and personalization to complete. Opportunities / Requirements: All AVID Juniors are required to apply to at least 2 essay-based scholarships each semester. School week-long breaks a great opportunity of time for this. Research scholarships & scholarship postings.

Preparing for College: Explore All Options AVID students will be researching at least two colleges / universities a week and compiling data and facts on college “hotsheets” to analyze interest and compatibility. AVID students will be doing two project this year about college: Fall – Types of colleges (group) Spring – Top choice college (individual) Open minds to all options now. Discuss research. Finalize decisions senior year.
