JOURNAL: Think of a time when you had to make a difficult decision. Why was the decision difficult? How did you make your decision? Consider what you know about Odysseus. How do you think he will make an important decision based on his previous actions?

Common Archetypes Moving beyond the epic hero

Female Characters The Trouble maker The Temptress The Damsel in Distress The Earth-mother The Wise Old Crone

The Other characters The outcast The sidekick The village idiot The innocent The devil The mentor And of course THE HERO

Plot Cycles The journey The mission The rescue Star-crossed lovers Boy chases girl

Images * These can be symbolic in representation but are archetypal images because they reoccur –The special weapon –The cave –The monster –The chalice or cup –The box or chest

Why do these archetypes exist? They are simply patterns of life –Women CAN cause men problems –Life IS a journey that teaches us things –Those that weld special weapons ARE powerful Time does not change these simple truths and literature continues to use them to tell our stories.
