Summarizing  A summary is a short statement that presents the main ideas and most important points expressed in a piece of writing.  If you know how to summarize, you will become an effective reader.  It’s important to distinguish between important and unimportant details. The most important details are the ones supported by the text.

A good summary…  A restatement that incorporates all of the main ideas or events without using unnecessary details.

Who could be a monster? 

Character’s motives  In this teleplay, we will examine characters’ motives or the emotions or goals that drive characters’ actions. Motives/ why?

Background… THE COLD WAR The cold war began when Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin refused to accept the Marshall Plan, which aimed to stabilize Europe’s economy after WWII. His refusal spawned great anticommunist sentiment in the United States.

Continued…  The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) held many hearings in which prominent Hollywood actors and directors were interrogated about their involvement with the Communist Party. Many were blacklisted from the movie and television industry because of their alleged involvement with the Communists. In much of the same way, Sterling’s characters “blacklist” one another in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.
