“GET SMART! GREAT START!” By: Kelsey Bobrowski, Abby Brummett, Crystal Converse and Natalie Gutzler

Target Population  26 fourth grade students at South Roxana Elementary School  The participants were ages 9-10

Needs Assessment  Contact with our Community Partners: Janna Pitchford (teacher) and Regina Chappel (food service director)  Windshield Tour of South Roxana  Survey students at South Roxana Elementary School  Asked students what they ate for breakfast and lunch

Mission Statement  The program “Get Smart! Great Start!” aims to provide students with primary prevention activities to increase their knowledge and understanding of the negative effects of skipping breakfast and the benefits of choosing healthy breakfast alternatives.

Goal  To decrease the number of students in Roxana (through primary prevention) who do not eat breakfast, and increase the amount of students who choose to eat healthy breakfast alternatives.

Evaluation  Directions for pre-test/post-test were not followed  Only 17 evaluations were accounted for  Objectives could have been met if all evaluations were accounted for

Learning Objective 1  After implementation, when given a post-test, 60% of students who participate will be able to recall two reasons eating breakfast positively impacts their health.  Results: Only 12% of students answered correctly.  Status: Goal was not met

Learning Objective 2  After implementation, 90% of students will be able to identify at least two healthy breakfast options when given choices.  Status: Goal was met with 100% accuracy.

Learning Objective 3  After implementation, when given a post-test, 90% of students will either agree or strongly agree that breakfast is important.  Status: Goal was not met with only 88% accuracy

Recommendations  Contact community partners early  Conduct a thorough needs assessment  More classroom time  View the classroom setting prior to implementation  Hands-On Activies
