2 nd Grade Utah Core Curriculum - Standard 2 - Objective 1
A rock is a solid material made of minerals. The rocks you see around you – the mountains, canyons and riverbeds – are all made of minerals. Rocks are nearly always made of mixtures of different minerals.
Think of a chocolate chip cookie as a rock. The cookie is made of Flour Butter Sugar Chocolate Chips
These ingredients can be called the minerals of the cookie!!
There are three types of rocks. These types are determined by how the rocks were made. Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic
Igneous rocks are formed by magma being cooled and becoming solid.
Many igneous rocks are used in buildings and carvings.
Sedimentary Rocks are formed by broken bits and pieces of other rocks.
Many sedimentary rocks have layers of sediment. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.
Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that have changed form due to heat and pressure.
Metamorphic comes from the Greek words meta and morph. Meta means change and morph means form.
