Corporate Pro Bono (“CPBO”)Corporate Pro Bono (“CPBO”), a partnership project of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Pro Bono Institute, developed the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge SM to enable corporate legal departments to identify, benchmark, and communicate their commitment to pro bono service to coworkers, legal department staff, and colleagues in other departments.Association of Corporate CounselPro Bono Institute, The CPBO Challenge SM calls for Chief Legal Officers of major corporations: o to encourage and promote pro bono service by their legal department staff o to use their best efforts to encourage their staff, including at least one-half of their legal staff, to support and participate in pro bono service. o to encourage the outside law firms to acknowledge their support for pro bono by becoming signatories to the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge®. All Challenge Signatory companies receive information, guidance and tailored support, free of charge, from Corporate Pro Bono to strengthen their pro bono programs or start new ones.

Corporate Pro Bono Challenge SM Statement: As Chief Legal Officers of major corporations, we recognize the critical importance of pro bono service as a cornerstone of our professional identity and accept the unique role that we can play in promoting pro bono in our legal departments. As corporate leaders, we understand that the legal and business interests of our clients are furthered when access to the legal system is readily available to resolve disputes. In recognition of our commitment and as signatories to this Corporate Pro Bono Challenge SM, we will encourage and promote pro bono service by our legal department staff and use our best efforts to encourage our staffs, including at least one-half of our legal staff, to support and participate, as appropriate, in pro bono service. To underscore the importance of promoting pro bono service, we will encourage the outside law firms with whom we work to acknowledge publicly their support for pro bono by becoming signatories to the Pro Bono Institute’s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge®.

The rising trend in corporate social responsibility has had a significant impact on major corporations, nationally and worldwide, and pro bono is quickly becoming an important aspect of that trend. The CPBO Challenge SM 100 is an important first step toward making pro bono an integral part of the culture at all in-house legal departments. It gives in-house legal departments the opportunity to build on existing CSR programs, while enabling in-house attorneys to use their unique and vitally important skill set for the greater good. The Challenge 100 is an important milestone that recognizes the stature and leadership of companies that have committed to the Challenge and seeks to increase momentum and pro bono culture within the corporate community.

One hundred corporations have demonstrated their dedication to corporate social responsibility through pro bono legal work in signing on to the CPBO Challenge SM. Becoming the industry standard, it is the only national and global benchmark of in-house pro bono. Corporate Pro Bono congratulations [COMPANY NAME] for their commitment and dedication to legal pro bono work.
