Fathers as Trainers  Ephesians 6:1-4 – “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”  Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Fathers as Trainers  Definition of Training:  To develop or form the habits, thoughts, or behavior of (a child or other person) by discipline and instruction:  To make (a person) fit by proper exercise, diet, practice, etc., as for an athletic performance  To discipline and instruct (an animal), as in the performance of tasks or tricks.  To bring (a plant) into a particular shape or position by bending, pruning, or the like

Fathers as Trainers  Teaching  Discipline

Teaching of a Father  Definition of Teaching:  To impart knowledge or skills  Give instructions  Instruct; tutor; train; educate;  Inform; enlighten; school;

Teaching of a Father  Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house”  Deuteronomy 6:20-25 – “When your son asks you in time to come saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statues… then your shall say to your son”

Discipline of a Father  Hebrews 12:5-11 – “no chastening (discipline) seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”  Proverbs 13:24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”  Proverbs 29:15 – “The rod and rebuke give wisdom”  Proverbs 29:17 – “Correct your son, and he will give you rest”

Discipline of a Father  Example:  Eli I Samuel 2:12 – “Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord” I Samuel 3:11-13 – “his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them”

Conclusion  Fathers are given the great responsibility of training up their children in the Lord.  Ephesians 6:1-4 – “And you, fathers… bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”  Proper training involves much teaching:  Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children”  Proper training involves much discipline:  Proverbs 13:24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”
