Lesson 5.11 EbD Standards and Skills and Community Needs 1 ® ®

Essential Question: ® How can I take the information I have gathered about the culture, demographics and perceived need in my community and apply the skills from the standards that I am learning in class to design a project that will help the community?

Lesson 5.11 Standards and Skills and Community Needs Overview 3. Applying STEM standards to Service- Learning Projects 2. Video- The Secret of Trees 1.Class Basics Notebook Line of Learning NGSS and Common Core Standards 4. Brainstorming: Application of Skills sets ® 5. Reflection

Prepare your notebook Table of contents ®

Line of Learning Lesson Standards and Skills Applied Question: How can I break down the standards into skills that I will use with the projected project? date your entry. ®

Standards Statement ® Students will use the resources given to answer questions about service learning and its uses with engineering and learning core content. They will be using different sources to synthesize the information into a document that will be added to their notebooks as an artifact of this unit. Standards: NGSS HS. Engineering Design HS-ETS1-1. ETS1.b: ELA/Literacy – RST , RTS

Engaging Prior Knowledge ® Think about solar panels:  How have you seen them used?  Are there any disadvantages to solar panels?  What are they?

® The Secret of Trees

®  What is the mathematical formula that Aiden discovered was apparent in trees? Discussion:  What would the community gain and what would Aiden gain from the experience?

® The Secret of Trees  What standards apply to this project and what Aiden would be learning? Discussion:  What standards apply to this project and what Aiden would be learning? Math Language Arts Science Technology

Standards: NGSS and CC ® Discuss  Determine 3 standards that could be applied to this project.  What are the related skills?

Discussion: How much better were you about observations from the first time that you were observing? ®

Review the Flow Chart that helped you organize  Go back to your flow chart, your notebook and other artifacts that you have collected about your community and the needs.  Determine what the major learning goal for the project is. Will it be in Engineering, Science or another discipline? ®

Applying Standards to the Perspective Project ®  Look at your original tasks  Determine the steps it will take to accomplish each task  What academic standards will you use?

Share out the tasks and skills with the class ® Get feedback from your peers about your understanding and the application of the standards. Have you made a good application of the standards to your project?

Questions?? ® ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Reflection Have you..  Examined the standards and the tasks and skills that are applied to this potential project?  Integrated and evaluated multiple sources of information?  Created a document that will be used as a guiding document for the project when you begin the process? ®
