Elements of Literature The Short Story: Setting

The time and location in which a story takes place is called the setting. For some stories the setting is very important, while for others it is not.

Setting There are several aspects of a story's setting to consider when examining how setting contributes to a story (some, or all, may be present in a story)-

Setting a) Place - geographical location. Where is the action of the story taking place?

Setting b) Time - When is the story taking place? (historical period, time of day, year, etc)

Setting c) Weather Conditions - Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, etc?

Setting d) Mood or Atmosphere - What feeling is created at the beginning of the story? Is it bright and cheerful or dark and frightening?

from “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway One hot evening in Padua they carried him up onto the roof and he could look out over the top of the town. After a while it got dark and the searchlights came out.

from “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway The others went down and took the bottles with them. He and Luz could hear them below on the balcony. Luz sat on the bed. She was cool and fresh in the hot night.

Setting What were some elements of SETTING? HotRoof EveningDark PaduaFresh

Setting Review The setting tells you where and when the story takes place. Helps set the mood of the story. The language of the story helps establish the setting.

Story Time Cain and Abel Genesis Chapter 4

Recall God created the Universe. God created man. God created The Garden of Eden for man. God created woman from man. Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge and knew sin. God cast Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden.

So God sent Adam and Eve out of the garden…

Eve had two babies…

Adam and Eve had other children…

Cain became a farmer.

Abel became a shepherd.

Cain and Abel make sacrifices to God.

Cain was angry!

Cain was angry with his brother.

God saw what Cain had done to his brother.

And God was no longer with Cain.

Why didn’t God like Cain’s offering? ~ God cared about the thoughts behind the gifts. ~Abel DID and GAVE his BEST. ~God’s loving reminder made Cain mad at his brother instead of himself.

Am I my brother’s keeper? ~ We all feel jealous. ~We all make mistakes. ~God doesn’t make mistakes! ~God does not have a favorite. ~We must take responsibility for our actions.

Setting? When? Earth was new. Where? Near the Garden of Eden. Land? Fields. Can grow crops and raise sheep.
