After following in his fathers footsteps, he became the most successful empresario. He received a total of five grants from the Mexican government due to them trusting him and his colonists to become loyal Mexican citizens. He left a lasting impression on Texas and is now called the “Father of Texas”.

Received a grant for settlement in the area of Nacogdoches. He squabbled with the Spanish Government about the squatting of families living on his land without titles. This led to a revolt and the loss of his colony.

Next to Austin, the most success- ful empresario was DeWitt. From Missouri, he was authorized to bring 400 families to Texas in The town of Gonzales was established as its headquarters. Early growth was slowed by Native Americans, but by 1831 he had issued 166 titles.

Native of Mexico, he settled families along the Guadalupe River. His wife's family had offered a dowry which enabled the couple to found the town of Victoria. Native American raids troubled the colony, but the colonists prospered by farming and ranching.

Both men were natives of Ireland and they settled Irish immigrants along the Gulf Coast. They named their central town Refugio which was the name of the site of an old Spanish mission.

Established the second Irish colony in Texas by the name of San Patricio, named after the Irish patron Saint Patrick.
