Saint Patrick's Day Patron Saint of Ireland

A stained glass image of a man in bishop's [clothes] (…) adorns one window of the beautiful Church of Ireland chapel at Saul, near Downpatrick, County Down. This is, of course, St Patrick, who it is believed, built his first Church on that very site. Whether he did or not, we do not know; tradition claims so much for him but the facts remain elusive. So who was the real St Patrick? We can confidently say that he was a real person. He tells us so himself, having left us a record, his Confessio, a justification of his life, written in Latin when he was an old man. This authentic record is a fascinating insight into Patrick, the man; written in his own words, we hear all about his fears and concerns, but little concrete about the places he went to, churches he established and people he met.
