Success Principles

2

 Verse  Success principle  Practical application 3

 Body health Bg 17.8 (food in goodness)  Mind Bg 6.6 (greatest friend)  Soul Bg 2.29 (soul amazing)  Relationships Bg 5.7 (dear to everyone) 4

Excuses  Arjuna’s reasons why not to fight Ready for success  Bg Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of miserly weakness. In this condition I am asking You to tell me for certain what is best for me. Now I am Your disciple, and a soul surrendered unto You. Please instruct me. Overcoming lower self  Bg People will always speak of your infamy, and for a respectable person, dishonor is worse than death. 5

Self-perception  Bg This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same. Being Positive  Bg In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear. 6

Confidence  One who takes shelter of the Supreme Lord has nothing to fear, even in the midst of the greatest calamity. Bg 1.19 P  A strong faith that by Krsna consciousness one will be elevated to the highest perfection of life is called vyavasayatmika intelligence. Bg 2.41 P  Faith means unflinching trust in something sublime. Bg 2.41 P 7

Problem-opportunity  O Partha, happy are the ksatriyas to whom such fighting opportunities come unsought, opening for them the doors of the heavenly planets. Bg 2.32  The servitor is always ready to render service to the Lord, and, similarly, the Lord is always seeking an opportunity to render some service to the devotee. Bg P 8

Potential  Bg Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing, and some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, cannot understand him at all. Focus  Bg Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim is one. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who are irresolute is many-branched. 9

Self-interest  Bg One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well.  Bg For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends, but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy. 10

Raise your standards  Bg (transcendental consciousness)  Bg (become dear to Krsna)  Bg (act with knowledge)  Bg (transcend the modes)  Bg (develop divine qualities) 11

Communication skills  Bg Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature. Mental fitness  Bg And satisfaction, simplicity, gravity, self- control and purification of one's existence are the austerities of the mind. 12

Knowledge  Bg That knowledge by which one undivided spiritual nature is seen in all living entities, though they are divided into innumerable forms, you should understand to be in the mode of goodness. Action  Bg That action which is regulated and which is performed without attachment, without love or hatred, and without desire for fruitive results is said to be in the mode of goodness. 13

Worker  Bg One who performs his duty without association with the modes of material nature, without false ego, with great determination and enthusiasm, and without wavering in success or failure is said to be a worker in the mode of goodness. Understanding  Bg O son of Prtha, that understanding by which one knows what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, what is to be feared and what is not to be feared, what is binding and what is liberating, is in the mode of goodness. 14

Determination  Bg O son of Prtha, that determination which is unbreakable, which is sustained with steadfastness by yoga practice, and which thus controls the activities of the mind, life and senses is determination in the mode of goodness Hapiness  Bg That which in the beginning may be just like poison but at the end is just like nectar and which awakens one to self-realization is said to be happiness in the mode of goodness. 15

Qualities  Bg Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness - these are the natural qualities by which the brahmanas work. Free will  Bg Thus I have explained to you knowledge still more confidential. Deliberate on this fully, and then do what you wish to do. 16

Contribution  Bg For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, pure devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. The ultimate success  Bg There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear. 17

 Written plan  Clear results  Motivation, inspiration  Daily action  Challenge: excuses or results  Reports, accountability  Bg That action which is regulated and which is performed without attachment, without love or hatred, and without desire for fruitive results is said to be in the mode of goodness. 18

19

 G oals  I nstructions  T ests  A ction 20

 What do you want?  Write it down  Be specific  Have a deadline  If you do not know what you want even God cannot help you 21

 What BG instructions can help you achieve this goal?  What BG instructions can help you pass the tests?  Bg index, Vedabase  Ask devotees  Get ideas from other sources 22

 Weakness of heart (hrdaya daurbalyam) Bg 2.3  Lust, anger, greed Bg  Laziness, procrastination Bg  Fear Bg P  social, familial or religious considerations... some other impediments. Bg P  objections from family members Bg P  undertake all kinds of risks Bg 3.29 P  Why such risk? Because they wanted to spread Krsna consciousness Bg P 23

 I am the... ability in man. Bg 7.8  Five factors of action (Supersoul) Bg  Before one acts, there is some impetus, which is called inspiration. Bg P  The inspiration to work is the same if it comes from the scripture or from the instruction of the spiritual master. Bg P  One who performs his duty without association with the modes of material nature, without false ego, with great determination and enthusiasm, and without wavering in success or failure is said to be a worker in the mode of goodness. Bg

 Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kunti, even if such work is full of fault. Bg
