Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Electric Vehicles Coming to Oregon

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Oregon: Why Oregon? 3.7 million people and 3.7 million licensed passenger cars 70 percent of Oregon’s population lives along the I-5 corridor between the Portland area and Eugene Portland is the number one city and Oregon is the number two state per capita concentration of hybrids Even with limited availability, over 500 EVs in Oregon Over 100,000 customers of four major utilities participate in Green Power programs Compact urban development tied to land use regulations

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Oregon: Why electric? Oregon is a leader in moving forward with reducing greenhouse gas emissions Transportation accounts for up to 40 percent of all total emissions. Without reductions in this area, we will never make adequate progress Oregon also has one of the nation’s most aggressive renewable energy standards and linking transportation and electrification furthers both goals Lessens dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuels Green technology is the future and Oregon will continue to provide national leadership

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Oregon: What we’ve done so far Governor Kulongoski has signed an Executive Order creating a working group to support early EV introduction Oregon has established a standardized purchasing mechanism for EV charging stations to provide easy acquisition and bulk purchasing opportunities Oregon is creating installation guides for EV charging stations Building Codes Division has adopted a statewide rules on permitting and inspection of EV charging stations

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor American Renewal and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Oregon has applied for a $15 million grant under the Clean Cities proposal to continue national leadership Grant would deploy charging stations to support electrified vehicles and support average consumers looking to “buy electric” Conduct public outreach and education – including technician training – for EVs Gather data and study the use of electric vehicles and charging stations

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Working with carmakers from around the globe to bring EVs to Oregon

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Meetings with automakers BYD Nissan Toyota Think Smart Ford Mitsubishi

Theodore R. Kulongoski Governor Oregon: Leadership into the future Oregon will aggressively follow vehicle introduction and rollout plans Focus infrastructure investment with commute patterns that fit early EV ranges Support Level III (or fast charging) to connect all of state population centers Connect into mass transit system, including park and ride facilities Plan for future phases of deployment
