What is a mascot? Do you think mascots that depict Indians are demeaning? How do you think the American Indians feel about Indian mascots?

Discussion Questions 1.According to some Wisconsin tribal members, how and why are the mascots offensive? 2.Are some mascots more offensive than others? How and why? 3.Why do you think that Indians are the only group of people in the United States that are portrayed as mascots? 4.If all American Indians do not support the elimination of Indian mascots, does it take power away from other Indian activists? Why or why not? 5.How would you feel if your race or religion was used for a sport team mascot?

Honor or Insult? Directions: Write a 4 paragraph essay. – Paragraph 1- Introduction including your thesis which states whether you believe Indian mascots are honoring or insulting to the American Indian people. Remember introductions begin with a hook. Each sentences should get more specific until you end with your thesis. – Paragraph 2- This paragraph should give evidence supporting your opinion from you thesis. Evidence can be personal connections or quotes from the movie or article from class. – Paragraph 3- This paragraph should summarize the opposite opinion from yours and their arguments. Use information from the movie and article. – Paragraph 4- Conclusion including a restatement of your thesis. Remember conclusions begin with a restatement of your thesis and end with another hook.
