Ecosystems. Ecosystem – all the organisms in an area along with their environment (habitat) - includes biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors.
What is an adaptation?  An action or characteristic that helps a living thing survive in its environment.  Adaptations help them to: – get their food.

Presentation transcript:

A biome is an extensive area of similar climate and vegetation. Notes on Biomes A biome is an extensive area of similar climate and vegetation.

Factors that affect Biomes Abiotic factors determine what plants and animals will live there. They include: Temperature Light Intensity Amount and patterns of rainfall

Terrestrial biomes of the world include: Tundra Boreal Forest (Taiga or Coniferous Forest)* Deciduous Forest* Grasslands* Tropical Rainforest Deserts* * = biomes of the continental U.S. Grassland Deciduous Forest

Aquatic biomes of the world include: Marine – includes all the oceans/seas. Has at least 3.5% salt. Freshwater – includes lakes, ponds, rivers and streams Estauries – areas where fresh and salt water mixes. Coastal areas. Marine Freshwater Estauries

MINNESOTA!!!

Why 3 Biomes in MN? 1. Amount of rainfall Plants need water to photosynthesize 2. Number of days without killing frost (growing season) Plants need a certain temp for enzymes to work for photosynthesis
