to English I with Mrs. Barber WELCOME 1

THIS CLASS WILL BE AN ADVENTURE: CHALLENGING – BUT FUN! YOU WILL CLIMB METAPHORICAL MOUNTAINS, BROADEN YOUR MIND, EXPLORE, AND EXPERIENCE THE JOY THAT CAN COME OF LEARNING, AND OF BETTERING ONESELF. 2

 I have a degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas.  I spent three years as a professional journalist working at local news organizations:  News Director at KNTU-FM 88.1  News Anchor at WBAP 820 AM and 96.7 FM  Associate Producer & Assignment Editor at NBC 5  After leaving the news industry I taught English at South Grand Prairie High School.  I am now very excited to be with you all at Haltom, which is where I graduated ten years ago. I AM LINDSAY BARBER. GO BUFFS!!! 3

I am married to Troy. We like to go camping, snowboarding, horseback riding, scuba diving, hiking, canoeing, and as many other adventures as we can get our hands on. 4

We have two daughters and a dog.  Sam, 6Alex, 4  Clifford, the best dog ever. 5

We are on an journey together. It will be challenging, but fun. If everything were easy, what would even be the point in doing it? We could never rise to the occasion, triumph, or succeed. I expect great things from you this year. 6 Teaching Philosophy:

1.Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be turned off and put away out of sight before the tardy bell. 2.I will not tolerate put downs or negative remarks about others in this classroom. 3.Rather than talking, LISTEN while Mrs. Barber, another student, or a guest speaker is sharing with the class. You will glean knowledge from listening, I swear. 4.Participate in all activities, every day. This means completing class work during the allotted time, turning in completed homework assignments, contributing to class discussions, and pulling your weight during group work. 5.Keep all hands, feet and objects to yourself. (This is juvenile, but it has proved itself a necessary rule in the past.) CLASS RULES 7

 If you choose to break a rule, you will face consequences.  FIRST TIME: Name on board – warning.  SECOND TIME: – 15 minute detention after school Thursday  THIRD TIME: 30 minute detention after school Thursday  FOURTH TIME: 45 minute detention after school Thursday, parents called  FIFTH TIME: 1 hour detention after school Thursday, referral written, student sent to the office.  SEVERE DISRUPTION: Student sent immediately to office.  Names and checks erased every Thursday to begin anew. 8 WHAT HAPPENS IF I BREAK A RULE?
