VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPICS

OLYMPIC MOTTO AND CREED CREED “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” MOTTO Citius-Altius-Fortius Faster –Highter-Stronger.

Olympic History The Winter Olympics are held every 4 years. During the winter Olympics athletes complete in snow sports and ice sports. The Olympics were stopped in 1940 because of WW ll. They started again in 1948 and they started having fun.

Olympics in Canada Summer Olympics in Montreal, 1976 Winter Olympics in Calgary, 1988

Vancouver Olympic Mascots

The three Olympic mascots are Quatchi, Miga and Sumi. Mukmuk is our “electronic” mascot. My favourite mascot is Sumi who is a mixture of black bear, orca whale and thunderbird. Sumi has a lot of respect for paraolympians because they have to overcome disabilities as well as train for the olympics. Sumi loves fern green just like me. He comes from Whistler, British Columbia. Sumi’s home is in the BC mountains. He LOVES alpine skiing. Sumi and I both like the colour fern green. We really enjoy drinking cocoa. I make hot cocoa when it is really cold. Sumi is from Whistler which is in the BC mountains. I went to Whistler once when my dad was working there. Sumi loves alpine skiing. I have been alpine skiing with my parents and really enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll get to go again. Sumi is part thunderbird. It made me think about how I like thunder and I like birds. A thunderbird’s wings can make sounds like thunder.

Mukmuk Have you heard about an Olympic mascot that is found in cyberspace ? Mukmuk is a Vancouver Island marmot. Some people were hoping he would get full Olympic mascot status but the petition failed. Did you even imagine that the Olympic mascots would have a sidekick ? Mukmuk LOVES to make new friends with other marmots and other animals. His favorite color is berry orange Mukmuks favorite foods are flowers, ferns, and berries. He LOVES hibernating and sunbathing. HE LOVES TO EAT. His dream is to tell the world about his fellow island marmots. His hobbies are eating, burrowing, eating, making friends, eating.

OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY The Olympic flame traveled through Greece for 8 days after it was lit by the sun. It was passed over to Canada on October 29, 2009 and they took it to Victoria. This was the official start of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The Olympic torch is almost in Vancouver. The first Olympic Torch Relay was in 1936.

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Logo The logo is a symbol using the Inuit Inukshuk. The Inukshuk is a stone marker used to guide the Inuit people in the Arctic. It is named Ilanaaq which means “friend” The logo is a symbol of leadership, cooperation, friendship and human spirit. The blue and green colors represent Canadian west coast island, forests and mountain ranges. The red represents the Canadian maple leaf while the gold is for the brilliant sunrises that light up the Vancouver downtown skyline and the surrounding snow capped mountain peaks.
