Best Practices in Assessing Leadership Potential Determine the leadership level of the position. Is a company CEO held to the same standard as the store manager? Build a competency model. Competency Models A competency model is a set of: Skills Knowledge/Qualifications Abilities Other attributes that are relevant to successful performance in a particular job.

For example, the competency model for the principal of a high school might consist of problem-solving and decision making skills, planning and coordinating skills, visioning skills, budgeting skills, delegation, ability to build relationships, ability to resolve conflict, communication skills, be a motivator, be honest, have integrity, cope with stress, have an in-depth knowledge of the higher education system, know various educational techniques, etc…

Measuring the Effects of Leadership Leader’s effectiveness and performance ratings. Followers’ ratings (of the leader) of satisfaction, organizational climate, morale, motivation, and leadership effectiveness. Criteria & Metrics. These are “actual” results.
