Automotive Service & Repair Compounds R. Bortignon

The following slides highlight chemicals commonly used in high school automotive shops. There are 2 reasons for this slide show… 1) Practical: these are items that should be kept in your automotive shop as they are used extensively. 2) Safety: both you & your students should follow the manufacturer’s directions for using these products safely. eye protection eye protection hand/skin protection hand/skin protection respiratory protection respiratory protection fire prevention fire prevention

Penetrating Oils helpful on stubborn bolts/nutshelpful on stubborn bolts/nuts

Anti-Seize (Never-Seize) Compounds excellent for metal-to-metal contact where parts tend to corrodeexcellent for metal-to-metal contact where parts tend to corrode  exhaust manifold bolts, oxygen sensor threads, caliper contact points etc.

Cleaners

Locking Fluids (Loctite) Blue: can be removed with hand tools Red: apply heat to remove Green: apply heat to remove

Adhesives weatherstrip adhesive: great for holding gaskets in place during assemblyweatherstrip adhesive: great for holding gaskets in place during assembly epoxy: helpful to have in a shop to repair countless itemsepoxy: helpful to have in a shop to repair countless items

Sealants silicone: must be O2 sensor compatiblesilicone: must be O2 sensor compatible  use where 2 gaskets meet  sometimes used in place of a gasket  needs 24 hours to cure before adding oil or coolant Form-A-Gasket: excellent companion for paper & cork based gasketsForm-A-Gasket: excellent companion for paper & cork based gaskets  use with water pump gaskets, oil pan & valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, cylinder head & water pump bolt threads etc.

Miscellaneous Lubricants grease cartridge & tub that can be used with wheel bearings & chassis (steering & suspension) partsgrease cartridge & tub that can be used with wheel bearings & chassis (steering & suspension) parts caliper lube: use on caliper float points where metal slides on rubbercaliper lube: use on caliper float points where metal slides on rubber oiling can with engine oil to lube door hinges etc.oiling can with engine oil to lube door hinges etc.
