Who's Hyped?

Purpose I would like to test the effects of energy drinks on the heart rate of Daphnia Magna.

Real Life Connection Teens are drinking a lot of energy drinks these days. Some people have died from them. I am trying to find the dangers of energy drinks in my experiment.

Research There were studies at the University of Miami Concerning the use of energy drinks. The lead pediatrician was Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz. According to studies 30-50% of adolescents are drinking energy drinks regularly. The energy drink market was supposed to have reached over 9 billion dollars last year.

Research (continued) In many news reports it has cautioned parents against energy drinks due to the amount of caffeine in these drinks. The healthy daily limit for a twelve year old is about 100mg every day. Most energy drink companies claim that they are dietary supplements and, therefore, are not monitored by the Food and Drug Association (FDA) like soft drinks.

Mg of Caffeine per fl. Ounce Research (continued) Drink Mg of Caffeine per fl. Ounce Monster 10.0mg Amp 8.875mg Red Bull 9.524mg Nos 16.25mg 5-Hour 71.502

Hypothesis I think the 5 Hour energy drink will have the most effect on the Daphnia Magna in quantity and singularly because of the amount of mg of Caffeine per fl. oz.

Materials 6 pipettes A sharpie A microscope 15 microscope slides One can of Amp One can of Monster One can of Nos One can of Red Bull One bottle of 5-hour Microscope Camera Computer 15 Daphnia Magna

Procedure Hook up camera and microscope to computer Label 5 of the pipettes with the names of the energy drinks Label the last pipette Daphnia Use the daphnia pipette to put a daphnia on the slide Record the daphnia using the camera for one minute making sure to be able to see the heart the whole time Add one drop of monster to the slide using the monster pipette Record the daphnia using the camera for one minute making sure to be able to see the heart beat the whole time

Procedure (Continued) 8. Add another drop of monster to the slide using the monster pipette 9. Record the daphnia using the camera for one minute making sure to be able to see the heart beat the whole time 10. Continue this for 5 drops then repeat for three trials 11. Repeat steps 4-9 for each energy drink being sure to use different slides for each daphnia and different pipettes for each drink

Monster Heart Beats per Minute Drops of Energy Drink

Amp Heart Beats per Minute Drops of Energy Drink

Nos Heart Beats per Minute Drops of Energy Drink

Red Bull Heart Beats per Minute Drops of Energy Drink

5 Hour Heart Beats per Minute Drops of Energy Drink

Data Chart Beats Per Minute Drink Trial Base 1drop 2 drops 3 drops 4 drops 5drops Monster 1 138 111 117 129 102 75 Monster 2 75 51 30 18 9 0 Monster 3 129 108 117 123 81 0 Amp 1 141 132 99 75 69 63 Amp 2 150 135 120 129 117 87 Amp 3 153 108 69 63 48 0 Nos 1 150 87 129 123 126 120 Nos 2 93 144 129 150 147 123 Nos 3 165 141 147 138 132 141 Red Bull 1 135 93 66 72 33 0 Red Bull 2 141 129 78 96 87 84 Red Bull 3 129 54 126 111 132 117 5 Hour 1 159 129 90 108 126 120 5 Hour 2 129 123 99 111 0 0 5 Hour 3 120 141 117 123 108 0

Results I saw that the Red Bull had very little affect on the Crustaceans. I also saw that with most of the trials the heart rate went up but by the 3rd drop it started to slow down a lot and stay there. The Monster and Amp slowed it down but it wasn’t at a dangerous level. The 5 Hour on the other hand slowed the hearts down and stopped 2 out of the 3. When they got the Nos they went up and stayed up through out the trials

Conclusion In conclusion it was a tie for the most affect between 5 hour and Nos. The 5 Hour slowed their hearts down a whole lot and the Nos sped them up. If I could do my project again I think I might observe the rates long term to see if the energy drinks just went through the system or stayed there. In the future I will separate the ingredients and see how the different ingredients affect them.

Summary In my experiment I wanted to see the affects of the energy drinks on Daphnia Magna. I thought it would speed up the heart rates until I stopped but I thought wrong the heart rates sped up but then slowed down. This is why these drinks are dangerous. The drink might boost your energy but, in turn it might slow your heart down until it stops.
