Teaching and learning in health economics: Resources and support Health Economics Study Group Brunel University September 2007 Nancy Devlin Associate/Advisor, Economics Network

Aims of this session To introduce you to the services of the Economics Network, and support being provided for health economics. To provide information on recommendations/likely outcomes from the 2006 working group on Research Capacity in Health Economics. To seek your views on key issues in teaching and learning in health economics To get your suggestions about resources and support services you would find useful. To begin establishing a community of health economics teachers prepared to share resources and expertise with others.

Economics Network Activities Events –Workshops, away-days, conferences, visits, training (both standard, eg. for TAs, and bespoke) Resources –Lecture materials; exercises; Case studies, assessment question bank. Evaluating and improving performance –student surveys; analysis and support for improvement Initiatives –Funded Projects, e-Learning projects, awards Publications –Teaching Handbook, journals (IREE and CHEER), Newsletter, news. Networking –Departmental contacts, database.

Promoting and supporting health economics To date the Economics Network resources has concentrated mainly on core areas in UG programmes. The Economics Network recently appointed Associates in a number of sub-disciplinary areas (eg. Labour, Health Economics). Our aim is to promote and encourage health economics teaching and learning, by developing resources and providing active support similar to that currently available for core UG teaching and learning.

Working Group on capacity building in health economics National Coordinating Centre for Capacity Development, NHS. Chaired by Ali McGuire Reported August 2006, with 4 recommendations re: funded lectureships; additional MSc scholarships; post- doc training/placements; teaching resources. Some decisions/actions have been taken, but not yet public. Information will be circulated via HESG
