USING WINDOWS EXPLORER File Management

What is a file? A stored collection of data on a computer. The data may be:  A text document created in a word processor  A presentation  A workbook  A song  A photo  A video

How are files named? A name  up to 255 characters  Can include spaces  Can’t include /,\,?,*,:  any name you choose A file extension  3 or 4 letter code  Tells the operating system what kind of file it is  Not visible unless turned on

Common file types.doc or.docx – A document created in Microsoft Word.xls or.xlsx – A workbook created in Microsoft Excel.ppt or.pptx – A presentation created in Microsoft PowerPoint.mp3 – A music file.gif,.bmp,.tif,.jpg – Graphic files.avi,.mp4,.wmv,.mpeg – Video files.htm or.html - ????

Where are files stored? Files are stored in folders. These folders serve the same function as a filing cabinet. They gather files into categories to aid you in finding them.

What is file management? File management is the practice of organizing files and folders in some logical manner. Try to make this logic make sense to yourself and others! Microsoft Windows attempts to help you by having predefined folders already created for you. This is a perfect place to start!  My Documents  My Pictures  My Videos  My Music

What is Windows Explorer? Windows Explorer is a program that comes with all versions of Microsoft Windows. It allows you to do basic and advanced file management.  Creating new folders and sub-folders  Renaming files and folders  Moving files and folders  Copying files and folders

How do I start Windows Explorer? Click on Start menu, click on Programs, click on Accessories, click on Windows Explorer Press the Windows Key and the E Right-click on Start button and click Explore
