History of Computers

80 AD 3000 BC The abacus is invented in Babylonia. The Antikythera Device, a bronze mechanical lunar month calculator, is constructed in Greece. The abacus is invented in Babylonia.

1666 1679 Samuel Morland built a mechanical calculator that will add and subtract. Leibniz introduces binary mathematics. As with decimal, octal, and hexadecimal numbers, are organized into columns.

1829 1850 George Boole develops Boolean Logic which will one day become the basis for computer logic. The first typewriter is patented by William Austin Burt. It's slow and clumsy, but it's the first writing machine

1939 1956 Howard Aiken begins work on the Harvard Mark 1 with funding from IBM IBM builds the first hard drive. It contains fifty 24 inch disks, has a capacity of 5 MB and costs over US$1,000,000
