IST Workshop of January 2003 What have we achieved in EC projects In 2002 we started co-operation in following projects: IST - SMART - ASM partner (R&D) IST - BeEP - ASM partner (Accompanying Measures) IST - SIBIS - ASM partner (Accompanying Measures) ESD - PUB+ - ASM co-ordinator (Accompanying Measures) GROWTH - eCore - ASM partner (Thematic Network) GROWTH - PeBBu - ASM partner (Thematic Network) DG TRANSPORT - Step-by-step - ASM partner

ASM steps towards EC projects IST Workshop of January 2003 January Leonardo Da Vinci September FP - ESD October FP - IST June WE GOT IT!!... On paper December First advance payment on our bank account

How have we started... IST Workshop of January 2003 December person dedicated to EC project TOTAL CONFUSION ! January proposal in LdV programme NO SUCCESS... mid th Framework Programme investigation thematic seminaries... NCP web site... CORDIS... Work Programme, Guide for Proposes, calls... etc... MORE THAN TOTAL CONFUSION !!!

How have we started... IST Workshop of January 2003 September First idea for ASM proposal in ESD still mess but first proposal was written no success, however, very important step because... - first contacts with EU partners - experienced and very helpful advises - by writing we could better understood what is it all about, see main problems, learn how to organise yourself in writing, etc.

How have we started... IST Workshop of January 2003 October 2001NAS call for proposals 2 persons in EC“department” of ASM IST training Mrągowo - Prague - Cracow ZDJECIE We understand a bit more...

ASM “small strategy” for FP projects: IST Workshop of January 2003 I. BECOME CO-ORDINATOR= write your own proposal MINUS: you need to allocate more time - risk of failure PLUS: TAKE an ACTION, you are a BOSS, you can allocate lot of work for yourself in the project, INVITE TO BE INVITED - there is a chance to be re-invited WHO should write - ASM or professional “EC writer”? - DIY - long term investment - don’t write in PL and translate into EN - Polish English is enough good

ASM “small strategy” for FP projects: IST Workshop of January 2003 I. BECOME CO-ORDINATOR= write your own proposal which type of project is suitable for us ? - read projects already founded (CORDIS) - see what similar you can do - what can you add - be creative - during searching define experienced, potential partners read Work Programme - try find out what is main area of your interest (compare with already founded projects) verify your idea with NCP, potential partners etc...then follow Paul advice..

ASM “small strategy” for FP projects: IST Workshop of January 2003 I. Write your own proposal - our mistake were typical - poor knowledge or presentation of state of the art. - in Europe and each partner country - composition of partners - not relevant - don’t make it too complicated - study with clear aim - not too many levels /but see project requirements/ - refer to programme objectives and EU priorities (also more general as: gender, social impact, disable, etc.) - show why it should be done in European level co-operation - dissemination plan - involve partners into writing (don’t do all job yourself) - use pan-European vocabulary - don’t forget sign, stamp, etc - formal rules

ASM “small strategy” for FP projects: IST Workshop of January 2003 II. BECOME A PARTNER - MARKETING WORK MINUS: you take what they give you, who will invite you? PLUS: you get experience, you spend much less time on writing, smaller responsibility define co-ordiantors who would you like to join, who could need you as a partner, what can you offer, how your work can enrich the whole project, etc. e.g you can do similar work in Poland or fill in a gap on European level CONTACT co-ordination directly - call - - present your idea of co-operation - show that you can give them a profit

ASM “small strategy” for FP projects: IST Workshop of January 2003 II. BECOME A PARTNER Barriers: - nobody knows us - NAS - its risky - often NAS have passive approach - good consortia are “closed” Opportunities: - NAS are “WANTED” to be more involved - partners wish to visit new countries like Poland - most of people are very open at last to discuss

Results... IST Workshop of January 2003 June 2002 we won: three IST NAS projects one ESD project - ASM co-ordination !!! (also very good results in IST) two projects in thematic networks GROWTH one project at DG TRANSPORT - SAVE

Conclusions for ASM it was and it is worth to go for! IST Workshop of January 2003 WHY? - it is effort which will bring results in longer time and for long time - international co-operation, money for your product, new knowledge, PL & EU market information, travels,... HOW TO START? - let at last one person work on 6FP IST - define what you can do -good idea is the most important - start doing something ASAP - learn by doing - discuss your idea with as many people as possible - but in confidence (watch out competitors!)

Having hope it was helpful, THANK YOU for your attention !!! IST Workshop of January 2003 Maria Góreczna - ASM International Relations Manager tel. (0) or 09 ASM Centrum Badań i Analiz Rynku sp. z o.o Kutno; ul.Grunwaldzka 5
