What are Goals? Targets/objectives you want to achieve More intense/important than wants Reflect your needs/desires Change and must be revised over time Require a PLAN Directed by your values

Why have Goals ? Goals help you to be successful Goals can help you set a direction for your life People with goals achieve more Example: Harvard Survey of 1 st years. - 3% had specific written goals, 13% had clear non-written goals, 84% had no specific goals years later…, the 13% were earning 2x as much $$ as the 84%,… the 3% were earning 10 x as much $$$$$$$$$$.!!

Short term vs Long Term Short Term Goals Well defined timeframe Goal is clear Actions needed are clear Can identify most obstacles Often part of a long term goal Often accomplished intact Long Term Goals Timeframe undefined Goal is less clear Actions are unclear Hard to foresee obstacles Part of a life plan Often must be revised

Goal Setting Steps 1. Decide on a Goal 2. Develop a Plan of Action 3.Evaluate How You Did 4. Revise your Goal and Plans

SMART Model System  Specific: clear not vague  Measureable: can be measured or evaluated for progress  Action: include a plan (do)  Realistic: possible, achievable  Timely: include a timeframe (when)

Sample SMART Goal Bad Example : I want to lose weight Good Example : I want to lose 20 lbs. by April 1, 2011 by going to the gym for a 30 minute work-out 3 times per week and by not eating any fast foods.
