The ancient Egyptians developed in a fertile river valley The ancient Egyptians developed in a fertile river valley. Identify and describe TWO political, cultural, or economic characteristics of the ancient Egyptian civilization. All civilizations began around rivers, which provided irrigation for agriculture. Writing System- Egyptians created hieroglyphics Canals to control flooding – All civilizations had to worry about flooding, so they built levees and canals to prevent homes and crops from being washed away. Irrigation – All civilizations dug ditches to bring water to crops. Monarchies – Developed a monarchy supported by highly organized bureaucracies. This may have been a result of the need to organize the proper distribution of irrigation water and maintenance of the irrigation systems. Food surplus – All civilizations developed advanced farming techniques, which allowed them to grow large amounts of food. Cities – As the Egyptians developed better farming techniques, they grew surplus food and were able to support cities with large populations. (Along the rivers.) Religion— Egyptians developed a belief in many gods (polytheism).
