Chemistry Safety and Equipment

Where is the fire blanket located? Where is the fire extinguisher located? Where is the first aid kit located? On the North wall next to the fume hood On the west wall next to the fume hood Next to the fire blanket, by the fume hood.

Where is the shower located? Where is the eye wash station? Where are the goggles and aprons located? The shower is next to the teacher’s desk on the south wall. The eyewash is attached to the sink on the teacher’s desk. Next to lab station #1, on the north wall.

What should you do if you spill a chemical? What should you do if you have cracked or broken glassware? What should you use when handling hot objects? Tell the teacher first, and follow her instructions on cleaning it up. Tell your teacher and then get different glassware. Use tongs or pot holders.

What do you need to hold on to and transfer a crucible? If you want to heat a solid to dryness, what pieces of equipment would you need? If you wanted to measure the boiling point of water, what pieces of equipment would you use? The tongs will hold onto the object and prevent you from getting burned. Bunsen burner, ring stand, clay triangle, crucible, crucible tongs, and wire gauze. Thermometer, hot plate, beaker, crucible tongs, wire gauze, and tap water.

Do what you “oughta” add…. What do you need wire gauze with a ceramic center for? Which is more accurate for measuring volumes of liquid: beaker or graduated cylinder? Acid to water (to prevent splattering) To set your hot glassware on to Graduate cylinder because it has smaller increments (divisions- graduations)

What piece of equipment would you use to measure 4.60mL of a liquid? You have heated a solid to dryness, but need to make sure all of the water evaporates, what piece of equipment do you need? When would using a bunsen burner be more appropriate than using a hot plate? Transfer pipette or 5.00 graduate cylinder. Watchglass or evaporating dish When you want a temperature > 100C

When would using a hot plate be more appropriate than using a bunsen burner. After you are finished with your lab, what safety measures do you need to take? What do you need to do with your hair when using a bunsen burner? If open flame is not permitted, temperature <100C and when heating flammables Disposal, clean off lab tables and wash your hands. Tie it back.

True/False. It is fine to chew gum during chemistry lab. As long as your drink has a lid on it, it is ok to have during chemistry lab. True/Flase. Many chemicals cannot go down the sink for disposal. False NO!!! True.

True/False. If a fire drill is called during lab, make sure that the gas is turned off. True/False. If a fire drill is called during lab, take your lab papers with you. True/False. If a fire drill is called during lab, put goggles and aprons away. True False False.
