Transitional metals By Brianna Falconer Danisha Brown Dylan Neary

Periodic table context The periodic table is an important reference table is science. Elements are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. atomic number

Definition and name of group Symbol:Zn Atomic#:30 Atomic weight:65.39 Electronic configuration: Selected oxidation state:+2

Why are elements grouped together? Elements are grouped together depending on certain things for example like group 12 is the zinc family

Physical Properties Magnesium- it’s atomic number is 12 and it common oxidation number is+2 and it is also a mineral. Zinc-Zinc is also known as spelter it is a metallic chemical element its atomic number is 30. it is the first element in group 12 of the periodic table. Zinc is like a bluish pale gray looking color Cooper –is from the Latin word cuprum which means “from the island of Cyprus” it is also a chemical element its atomic number is 29 and it also has a very high chemical and electronically conductivity Gold- gold is a Latin word its atomic number is 79 it is precious metal and it is used for jewelry Mercury- it is also known as quick silver. it is a chemical element its atomic number is 80 and it is also a heavy silver

Chemical properties Low ionization energies Positive oxidation states Form colored compounds and ions in solution

Fun Facts There a 38 different types of transitional metals Transitional metals are ductile, malleable and conduct electricity as well as heat Iron, cobalt and nickel are the only elements found on the periodic table that can produce a magnetic field. Metal Mercury is called the "Liquid Metal" Iron nickel and cobalt are the only elements known to produce a magnetic field

Glossary Transitional metals-In the past it referred to any element in the d- block of the periodic table, which includes groups 3 to 12 on the periodic table. All elements in the d-block are metals.d- blockperiodic table Transition state- extremely brief interval of bond disruption and formation during which the activated complex exist Electronic configuration- distribution of electrons among orbitals of an atom Element- A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, which is the number of protons in its nucleus. The term is also used to refer to a pure chemical substance composed of atoms with the same number of protons.chemical substanceatomatomic numberprotonsnucleussubstance Periodic table- display of chemical elements
