Properties of Matter

 Matter: Anything that has mass and volume

 Substance: is a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it has a specific make-up or composition

 Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes

 All matter has chemical and physical properties

 Physical Properties of Matter  Physical Property: Is a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance

 Freezing, hardness, texture, color, flexibility, solid, liquid, gas, dissolves, luster, malleable, ductile

 Physical properties can be used to classify matter

 Chemical Properties of Matter  Chemical Property: Is a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances

 Flammability, Reactivity, Rusting

 Methane Gas: The gas can catch in fire and burn in air, when it burns, it combines with O 2 in the air and forms water and carbon dioxide.

 To observe chemical properties, you must change it to another substance

 Again are used to classify matter
