Future of the NEA Data Bank: A Dutch perspective Arjan Koning NRG Petten, The Netherlands NSC-EG meeting June , NEA Issy-les-Moulineaux

Contents Some short remarks about: Databases Computer programs NEA and EC (Brussels) From GEN-IV to GEN-III (industry)

Databases Should be, and is, at the core of the NEA Data Bank. Legacy of nuclear experiments, differential and integral, represent a valuable body of knowledge for those (nuclear scientists) who are left behind. Verification, Validation and Qualification of nuclear software and databases (e.g. JEFF) is going towards a higher degree of automation. Required: -Continue (or extend) development of ICSBEP, IRPHE, SINBAD and IFPE. -Bring SINBAD (level 1; compilation only) on par with ICSBEP (true benchmark) -Collaborate with NRDC (IAEA, BNL, JAEA, Obninsk) on quality of EXFOR

Computer programs NEA maintains a wide diversity of codes, ranging from purely numerical (i.e. non-nuclear) software, to specific specialized nuclear software. Perhaps there could be 3 levels of distribution: 1.Open software (freeware): directly available via weblinks. Examples: purely numerical software, and codes which are available elsewhere (other sites) as freeware. 2.Password-protected software (NEA liaison officers only), but still web-enabled (click) 3.Software that is only distributed via ftp or by DVD (the current method). In general, find a method that is optimal for progress in R&D in OECD “allied” countries

NEA and EC (Brussels) Mid/long term R&D programs are initiated/maintained by National governments EC Brussels IAEA NEA NSC The NSC has classified nuclear R&D in well-organized mid/long term structures (Working Parties etc.) Can/should NSC (including EG) recommendations, working Parties etc. be taken into account for the EU formulation of FP8++ calls? If so, how?

From GEN-IV to GEN-III (industry) 1.Observation: Nuclear energy revival goes faster than the birth of new nuclear scientists and engineers. 2.Assumption: Energy in, and energy dependence of, the OECD countries may turn out to be more important than sustainability Possible result: Shift of the (scarce) GEN-IV human resources to shorter-term R&D focus (e.g. lifetime extension, deep burn-up, safety margin optimization, etc.) Proposal: more industrial participation in the EG (and NSC) to anticipate that possibility.

Finally…… For the Netherlands: the NEA Data Bank is very important Overall very satisfied with the services
