JISC-SURF workshop 2002 SURF Strategic Plan 2003>6 The Heart of the Matter

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Change in Perspective ICT has permeated deeply into the primary processes. Institutions are becoming increasingly dependent on ICT infrastructure. Hence, more vulnerable in numerous areas.

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Change in Perspective 2 For SURF, to continue with ICT innovations, only, puts too much stress on the institutions. Quality improvement of education and research presupposes a sound ICT infrastructure; Business process redesign [e.g. MLE] Take the perspective of the user and strengthen the supporting processes by developing the right ICT applications and services.

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Change in Perspective 3 Cooperation & Competition

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 The Heart of the Matter: Perspective of the user instead technology Competition in Education and Research Cooperation in the use of ICT: >infrastructure & licences >middleware : standards, authentication, security. Continue to stimulate innovative applications that could have benefits on a broad level. This has far-reaching implications for the internal organization of SURF Foundation.

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Strategic Plan 2003 > 6 Basic network infrastructure >first mile; optical networks SURF Services >E-business ICT & Education >Call for proposals on specific innovative domains ICT & Research >E-science; Intellectual Property ICT & Administration >MIDDLE WARE; VULNARABILITY

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Why Cooperate with foreigners ? Advanced Research AND Education on a National Level only is absolutely impossible

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Why Cooperate with JISC ? We recognize and respect several cultural differences. But, as far as we know JISC is the one and only organization in Europe that resembles the SURF organization and its mission !

JISC-SURF workshop 2002 Will this turn out to be a Win - Win Collaboration ? YES, iff we start the collaboration with only a few organizations that can afford the extra investments that cross national collaborations need to successfully start up and complete their common project(s); and more important to disseminate the benefits to the user community.
