CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Publications Initiative Building A 21 st Century Systems Journal Briefing For The CPMT Board of Governors February, 2001 Paul Wesling Vice President, Publications
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Proposal: Move to the forefront of Systems Technology u “Packaging” is not recognized – Current mind-share is on “Wireless”, “System on Chip”, “Internet”, “B-to-B” – Our journals are: ¨ IEEE Trans on Components & Packaging Tech ¨ IEEE Trans on Advanced Packaging ¨ IEEE Trans on Electr Packaging Manufacturing – Us “insiders” know what this is; our broader audience is not attracted to it (Gedney)
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Window of Opportunity u The IEEE Board has targeted 11 new areas of technology for rapid development, in order for IEEE to be competitive in the 21 st Century u Many have no CPMT “component” u But “SOC” (System on a Chip) requires CPMT’s expertise to succeed
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Window of Opportunity u We already have TCs and Conferences addressing the infrastructure issues with SOC -- wafer-scale packaging, signal integrity, electrical performance, integrated passives, yield, reliability, modeling, thermal … u We are well positioned to take the lead
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Window of Opportunity u Being practical engineers, we think in terms of steps along the way -- eg, System on a Package, Wafer-Scale Packaging, etc u Nevertheless, the “sizzle” today is SOC, not “Packaging” or “SOP”
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Window of Opportunity u The IEEE Board will ask one (or two) Societies to quickly bring out a journal for “System on a Chip” –We can take the lead; or: –We can hold our ground and let other Societies re-purpose another existing journal for SOC u Seize the new field? Continue as-is?
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Window of Opportunity u The Publications strategy: –Propose migrating our T-AP to cover SOC –This is plausible, since we now cover all the implementing technologies: photonics, electronics, yield, modeling, reliability, etc –Expect to add the CAD/cores/architecture coverage through partnership with another Society (probably CAS)
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Motion for the CPMT BOG u “The CPMT BOG endorses renaming/repositioning the IEEE Transactions on Advanced Packaging as the IEEE Transactions on Integrated Microsystems or a similar name. The VP-Publications shall prepare the formal proposal.” We still need to check for conflicts with this or similar names
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Mock-up of New Transactions IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INTEGRATED MICROSYSTEMS Sponsored by the -System-on-Chip, System-on-Package Components, Packaging & Manufacturing Technology Society -Microelectronics, Photonics, RF, MEMS Integration -System-Enabling Technologies - Signal Integrity and Interconnections - Advanced Packaging -(your bullet here …) MAY 2002VOLUME 24 NUMBER 2 ITEPFL(ISSN ) Editorial P. Krusius 233 Abstracts SPECIAL SECTION ON INTEGRATED CORES Guest Editorial R. Blockridge 237 The Scrlkewso Sdovmed Llokds Dkelwe J. P. Snowblake 233 …... SPECIAL SECTION ON MEMS PACKAGING …...
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Our Approach u “Integrated Systems” includes all the photonics and other packaging we do now, so these papers rightfully belong in the newly named Journal u We will expand the scope to cover architecture, with IEEE blessing u We expect conflict with EDS, SSCS, and others, but we’re “most of the way there” now - farther than they
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Our Approach u Some topical areas will migrate to T- CPT; others to T-EPM u We will bring in recognized leaders in SOC (and other areas) for Special Sections and Regular Papers u T-AP is already classified by IEEE as a multidisciplinary journal, available across all of IEEE; no change needed
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Our Approach u The drive for our success would come from the IEEE Board and work that Ephraim and Ralph have done to bring the SOC community to us; we continue the infrastructure focus while adding the other SOC fields
CPMT Board Meeting Feb 10, 2001 Paul Wesling Our Approach u Pagecount: –800 pages in 2001 –Name change for February 2002 –1000 pages in 2002 (could be 1200 with CAS as a partner)
The VP-Publications shall prepare the formal proposal.”
