Preliminaries  Pre-class  List and define the 3 components of QNTs.  In your journals, write at list at least 3 things you do in order to practice good reading. 3 classwork pts.

Objectives:  The students will be able to identify their own reading speed.  Students will be able to identify two ways to view stories: biographical and historical.  Students will be able to evaluate which strategy works best for either text.

Focus Lesson: Reading Rates  Demonstration: one volunteer will time the teacher for 1 minute. Teacher will proceed to read silently. At the end of the minute, the teacher will record the reading rate.  Practice: do the same in pairs. One student will read while the other keeps time. After two attempts, reverse roles and repeat.

Focus Lesson: Taking Notes  Read the bullet points on Elements p. 942 while the class takes notes.  With a partner, have students turn to Elements, p. 944 and discuss their answers to “Reading Up Close.” Share answers with class.  “Tips for Staying Focused” on that page, tip number two is what they do when students take QNTs.

Homework  Write at least 1 5-sentence paragraph or 5 bullets on what you learned about reading and note taking.  Due 9/13 for 10 homework points.
