Petroleum A 1 Flashcards pp

Use the chart on pg. 177 to answer some of these questions.

nucleus

-central region of an atom containing protons & neutrons.

State the relationship between the number of carbon atoms and boiling points.

-the fewer number of carbons will always have a lower boiling point.

State the density, boiling point, & viscosity for those compounds with a low number of carbon atoms (like C 2 H 6 ).

C 2 H 6 -Low viscosity -Low density -Low boiling point

List 4 households items made from petroleum.

Plastic containers, synthetic fibers, medicines, detergents, cosmetics, adhesives, etc.

List 3 useful products derived from petroleum fractions.

Gasoline, jet fuel, alcohols, dyes, diesel oil and fuel, asphalt, paraffin, greases

State the density, viscosity, & boiling points for those compounds with a high number of carbon atoms (like C 30 H 62 ).

C 30 H 62 -High viscosity -High density -High boiling point

What is a hydrocarbon? Give an example.

-molecular compounds that contain only two elements, C & H -CH 4, C 6 H 14

Name three petroleum based products in this room.

Paint, ceiling tiles, seat covers, bulletin boards, etc.

What is a fractionating tower?

Tower used to distill petroleum and separate it into different fractions. They separate by differences in boiling points and by the number of carbon atoms.

Where in a distillation tower would you find petroleum fractions with: a)Low boiling points b) high boiling points

a) at the top b) at the bottom

Who has more petroleum then they use?

Central and South America, Middle east, and Africa

Who imports oil?

North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and Oceania

Would materials with a low number of carbons be solid, liquid, or gas?

gas

Would materials with a high number of carbons be solid, liquid, or gas?

solid

Are the intermolecular forces in compounds with a low # of carbons, strong or weak?

Weak intermolecular forces = low number of carbons.

Are the intermolecular forces in compounds with a high # of carbons, strong or weak?

Strong intermolecular forces = high number of carbons.
