Explorer Notes Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus’s goal was to find Asia but instead landed on an island and claimed it San Salvador. When he sailed again to find Asia, he landed on what today is known as the Bahamas. Cabeza de Vaca Cabeza de Vaca came to America with Panfilo de Navarez where they landed in Florida. The crew decided to sail to Mexico but was hit by a hurricane that landed them in what is today known as Galveston. De Vaca stayed in Galveston for three years. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado Francisco Vasquez de Cornoado led an expedition through Mexico and up through Texas and Arizona. Coronado and his crew were the first Europeans to see the Grand Canyon. They crossed the Pecos River onto the West Texas Plains. Eventually Coronado and his men reached Palo Duro Canyon, near present-day Amarillo. Sieur de la Salle Sieur de la Salle led an expedition down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed land along the way for France. Later la Salle sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi River and landed in Texas instead. They created a fort and named it Fort St. Louis. The fort was located between present-day Galveston and Corpus Christi.

Europeans Explore European countries began exploring by land, but decided to find a sea route instead. The sea route: - Was safer than land routes - Made the Europeans wealthier - Was faster than land routes goOvlsj3CrNKpEMEFBvx:bms.westport.k12.ct.us/lmc/images/AgeExpMap.jpg

Europeans Explore A Spanish explorer, named Cortes, led Spanish soldiers into Mexico. He discovered great wealth among the Aztecs. As a result of this, he wanted to continue to explore North America.

The Spanish and French in TX After Spain conquered the Aztecs, the Spanish wanted more land for their empire. The new lands conquered in the Americas were called New Spain.

The Spanish and French in TX When the Spanish were in TX, they heard many Native American legends. The Spanish were fascinated by the legend of Cibola. They sent 2 expeditions to search for the cities of gold. NUNHffqVW6VbcB3TGGTnS8Fw

Missions, Presidios, and Early Towns Although Fort St. Louis was destroyed, the Spanish were worried about French settlements. Spain built the missions to protect the new land they claimed.

Missions, Presidios, and Early Towns Spanish missions were run by Catholic priests. The Spanish built the missions near Native Americans. The Spanish wanted to teach them the Catholic religion and Spanish ways of life.

Missions, Presidios, and Early Towns Soldiers came with the missionaries. They built presidios, or forts, for protection. The missions and missionaries helped New Spain grow. The people soon adapted to the Spanish culture.
