Eradication of poverty through meeting the basic needs of the society Food “If it is true that nutritional deficiencies...during the early years of life affect development and prevent full realization of the child’s genetic potential, what kind of world are we preparing for the end of the century?”

“[I]t is not the absolute scarcity of resources which explains poverty in the Third world but rather the distribution... fostering inequality...” “It is a question of distributing [the needs] more equitably.” Satisfaction of the need for food and its production Transformation of political and socio- economic structures

Habitat - Shelter - Space that society organizes for living and to carry on those activities necessary to satisfy all its material and spiritual needs 1.Regional development and physical planning 2.Town planning 3.Public transportation 4.Water and community amenities 5.Self help construction

Health 1.Reallocation of resources directed towards prevention 2.Integration of health services into development service 3.Adaptation of health services into specific circumstances 4.A public need –oriented health system a.With participation of local communities b.Training of health specialists c.Research towards specific problems of society

Education -Not much of schools but productive enterprises a.Study areas b.Libraries and laboratories c.Communally organized services and facilities for recreation The curriculum and aims of education would not be predetermined and sequentially ordered but rather emerge from the continuing consultation and agreement at all levels of the society constantly related to real and immediate concerns.

Endogenous and self reliant society Human development Stimulating creativity leading to better utilization of production factors - search for new resources - Utilize them in new ways - sometimes questions the need for the product Self reliance at the a.International level: extend self reliance through cooperation with other countries b.National level: gives the economic content to political independence c.Local level: structural reforms

Environment -the framework and the very condition of the life of human societies - Preservation of the environment - limited resources - ecodevelopment Structural transformation Socioeconomic level: reform in ownership or control by the producers of the means of production Political level: democratization of power

Strategies Yee

“ From the beginning, the theology of liberation posited that the first act is involvement in the liberation process, and that theology comes afterward, as a second act. The theological moment is one of critical reflection from within, and upon, concrete historical praxis, in confrontation with the world of the Lord as lived and accepted in faith.” - The Power of the Poor in History

Praxis -It is not simply action based on reflection. -These include a commitment to human well being and the search for truth, and respect for others. - Praxis is always risky (Carr and Kemmis 1986: 190). -We must begin to exist as active agents rather than passively accepting the conditions of oppression and exploitation that surround us.

Self development The more passive people are, the more they will adapt, the more their creativity will diminish and their naiveté increases. Creating consciousness of struggle by transforming reality and liberating himself from the oppression In the same way, when he acquires a new way of thinking, his understanding of the social status that he holds changes him.

Transformation of the society - creating awareness on the causes of poverty (“conscientization”), solidarity with the poor and exposing oppressive systems -the poor must be freed from economic, political, and social oppression. -encounter with God is open to all (Christians and non Christians) through one’s love of his or her neighbor “We find the Lord in our encounters with others, especially the poor, marginated, and exploited ones. An act of love towards them is an act of love towards God.”

Cultural Synthesis This synthesis attempts to overcome the antagonistic activities begun by the oppressors and goes deeper than mere induction. It addresses the strength of one's own culture as a creative act and vindicates the oppressed by providing a different vision of the world than the one which has been imposed without question or examination.
